Biography

Sarah Luttrell is a mezzo-soprano from the Irish Midlands, recognised for the richness of her vocal colour across operatic and concert repertoire. She is a graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, where she completed her Master of Music with First Class Honours under Wilma MacDougall and was the recipient of the RCS Trust Postgraduate Scholarship. In 2024, she was awarded the prestigious International Opera Awards Bursary, marking her as an artist of exceptional promise on the international operatic stage.

Sarah was a member of the Wexford Festival Opera Factory Young Artist Programme (2022–2023), during which she appeared in a wide range of repertoire including Zibaldona Cinderella, Zita and La Ciesca Gianni Schicchi, and Zulma L’Italiana in Algeri. establishing her as a versatile singing actress. These performances established her as a versatile singing actress, equally at home in comic and dramatic roles.

In 2024, she made her international operatic debut with Opera Collective Ireland at the Kammeroper Festival, Schloss Rheinsberg, appearing as the Second Witch in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas.

Recent operatic highlights include her portrayal of La Contessa di Ceprano in Verdi’s Rigoletto with Irish National Opera, as well as her appearance as Mother in Madama Butterfly with the same company. She has also performed with Opera Collective Ireland, Clonter Opera, Northern Ireland Opera, and Blackwater Valley Opera Festival, in repertoire ranging from Handel and Mozart to contemporary and newly commissioned works.

A notable career milestone was her BBC Proms debut, performing Handel’s Alexander’s Feast with the Irish Baroque Orchestra, marking her appearance on one of the world’s most prestigious classical music platforms.

Alongside her operatic career, Sarah is an accomplished oratorio soloist and recitalist. She has appeared with leading ensembles including the Irish Baroque Orchestra, Orquesta Barroca de Sevilla, the Academy of Ancient Music, and the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland. Her concert repertoire includes Bach’s St Matthew Passion, St John Passion, and Magnificat; Handel’s Messiah and Alexander’s Feast; Mozart’s Requiem; Haydn’s Nelson Mass; and Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle. Most recently, she appeared as the Angel in Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius, marking a significant addition to her growing sacred and symphonic repertoire.

Sarah is also highly active as a choral artist, having been a member of the Voces8 Scholars and Ireland’s flagship professional ensemble, Chamber Choir Ireland, with whom she has performed extensively throughout Ireland, the UK, and Europe. Her choral work has included solo appearances in the world premiere of Eoghan Desmond’s Amra Choluim Chille and Handel’s Messiah, as well as projects with the Irish Chamber Orchestra and Irish Baroque Orchestra.

Alongside her performance career, Sarah is a dedicated music educator with extensive experience teaching and collaborating with choirs. She currently works as a vocal coach with the award-winning Cór Linn at the National Concert Hall. Her previous roles include working with the VOCES8 Foundation Choir and outreach programme, as well as the Irish Youth Training Choir.
